Cosmic Stroll 2 VR & Immersive Experience

A VR experience designed as an educational tool to expand our knowledge of the universe in partnership with Portsmouth University’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation

Introduction

Developed by Blue Donut Studios, and Blue Donut Games in partnership with the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation have created this VR immersive experience set on board a space station. As you walk around there are panels which display information about the project. The exhibitions contextualizes how we are able to see distant objects and how galaxies appear to be moving towards or away from earth as will as diagrams to explain the enormous distances involved in relation to time.

Step outside of the Airlock to enter the blackness of space to examine a sample of real scientific data to show these distant and ancient galaxies in a 3D space and travel way back to start the journey at a time before when the earth was formed.

This is a dramatic and moving journey to study some of the most distant galactic objects seen from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey gives us all a chance to get some idea of how vast and majestic even a small slither of the sky can truly be..

Although this is a VR experience, it is also aimed to be an educational tool to help people understand about parts of our galaxy we’ve not seen before. To leave the space station, head towards the airlock which will then take you outside, into space.. Explore the millions of galaxies which have been documented virtually, allowing you to take a trip through the history of our universe and learn all about what is presently out there beyond the stars.

Cosmic Stroll 2.0 has been developed with the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG) at the University of Portsmouth and has been further developed by the Blue Donut Studios creative team using our Imersar Engine tools in Unity.

On board the space station you will find information panels which shows scientific data relating to the discovery of new galaxies. The Galaxy data was collected as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey 3 (SDSS III).

VR Immersion

Cosmic Stroll 2 was developed for Google Cardboard. However Cosmic Stroll 2 has been developed for use on a mobile phone or a desktop computer without the need of a head set. We have also developed Cosmic Stroll 2 IME for use on the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 VR Headsets.

When you exit the airlock you will be taken out into space where thousands of galaxies have been brought into VR so that you can see them up close. Each galaxy also has it’s own info panel if you wish to know more.

Key Functions

  • Real scientific data

  • An educational tool and virtual experience

  • Open space to explore the many galaxies that have surveyed in a small slither of data

  • Information panels display details about the project

  • Use desktop, mobile or Meta Quest Headset to explore
